THE DARK SIDE

Every place has its 'Dark Side' and Toowoomba is no different, none more so than the unsolved murder of nurses Wendy Evans and Lorraine Wilson, whose skeletal remains were found on the cities outskirts. This tour explores Toowoomba's darkest secrets - the quirky, the tragic, the fascinating, the evil. They all have one thing in common, their impact is still felt today. (Note this tour has some adult themes and is not recommended for younger children.)

There is no better place to find the evidence of Queensland's emergence as a prosperous colony than Toowoomba's first subdivision, the Mort Estate. Laid out just five years after Queensland's formation the Estate provides a snapshot into those that prospered in the new colony. Leaving behind a legacy of magnificent homes the founding fathers of Queensland influence is everywhere. As Toowoomba evolved so did the Mort Estate. Workers cottages, schools, corner stores, interspersed with magnificent homes the Mort estate has it all.  

GOTHIC TO GRAND: DESIGNING TOOWOOMBA

From the world renowned Art Deco masterpiece that is the Empire Theatre to the Victorian Free Classical style of its magnificent Court House, Toowoomba has it all. Examples of Art Nouveau, Italianate, Gothic revival, simple Doric and Mid-century Romanesque Architecture dominate the cities CBD. THE FRONTIER WARS & BATTLE OF MEEWAH

While Toowoomba and its surrounds are home to the Giabal and Jarowair tribes it was Multuggerah, a leader from the Lockyer Valley, who united groups from across SE Queensland in a longstanding and effective campaign of resistance that severely restricted early colonial settlement. For several years Multuggerah initiated numerous attacks on early settlers, most notably the Battle of Meewah. Join Toowoomba Trails and learn of Multuggerah and his campaign to protect his homeland.
